memphisMemphis, a city well-known because it is the home of one of the most famous singers and founders of Rock’n Roll: Elvis Presley. This is the only thing you know about Memphis I guess or maybe you know that it is a City situated in Tennessee. I, however would like to talk about the criminality that afflicts this city. How many of you watch Criminal Minds, CSI, Cold Case and other tv shows like these every evening? You might think they are exaggerated but let me tell you something: they are not. Every single day someone is killed because of a kidnapping or because of a torture or because of a shooting, even in the States of the U.S. where the possession of weapons is illegal. In Tennessee the possession of weapons is legal. Crime in Memphis increased in 2005 and saw a dramatic rise in 2006. From that year to 2013 , crime in Memphis has increased by 20%. There are about 182 gangs in Memphis. These gangs are concentrated in high crime neighborhoods , especially in predominality black neighborhoods of North Memphis, South Memphis , Binghampton, Riverside and Frayser. I’m sure that when someone says “gang” you think only about gangs of black youths. That’s wrong. There are also latino gangs and Mexican gangs. Also the famous KKK ( Ku Klux Klan) movement still exists in Memphis. This klan, of white persons, played a violent role against African Americans in the south. They terrorized citizens at night often by burning crosses outside their homes. Klansmen usually wear masks to hide their identities. Today they still commit murders and tortures not only against African Americans but also against Jewish and Catholics but less than before. Memphis is the second city in the United States, according to the FBI’s annual crime rankings, with the highest crime rate in the Unite States
( the first one is Detroit, Michigan). So Memphis is the second most dangerous city in the Nation among cities with a population of over 500,000.
